Authentication
Probably more authentication and verification measures are taken by Michael Autumn than for any other artist - alive or dead. In order to protect the value of investment in his work the artist has gone to extreme measures to try to assuage many people's perception that digital art is easily reproduced or pirated - which therefore lowers its value. Being a computer architect, an expert in digital printing techniques and materials, and a museum-grade framer - puts him in a unique position to pull this level of security off.
- A database is maintained and kept up-to-date of all owners. All legal owners will be known and proof of purchase/exchange will be supplied.
- For security reasons a number of undisclosed forensic measures are used.
- The paper used for the prints is very exclusive.
- All limited edition work has an embossed mark on them with the edition number. The commonplace method of the artist writing the number of the edition on the work with pencil seems strangely naïve...
Prints are signed by the artist using unique paint before several layers of special UV protective and water-proof coating are applied - thereby making it impossible to tamper with the signature.
- A frame made by the artist or under his supervision adds considerable security and value to the work. Not only does it ensure the maximum longevity because the strictest museum techniques and standards are used, but the materials used in the frame are numerous, very distinct, and from specialised sources. Moreover, a sealed frame enables additional undisclosed forensic markers... Frames made thus will have an additional embossed mark on the mountboard immediately below and on the left edge of the work - in the case of glazed prints, and a tag with the same emboss will be attached at the back
- in the case of unglazed canvases.
- Images on the
internet are not identical to the originals - so even if someone somehow managed to extract images from the internet they would be of no value. No copy of the originals have ever been transmitted electronically - over the internet or otherwise. And given that Michael Autumn does all his own printing there are no electronic copies of his work anywhere.
